AI, Academic Integrity, and Responsible Use

AI can be an excellent learning tool, but using it incorrectly can violate academic integrity policies. This page outlines responsible ways to use AI in your courses.

Good Ways to Use AI

  • Asking for clarification of concepts you do not understand.
  • Generating practice questions or creating study guides from your own notes.
  • Getting feedback on grammar, structure, or clarity of writing after you write the first draft.

Misuse of AI in Coursework

  • Submitting AI-generated work as if it were entirely your own original work.
  • Using AI to complete exams, quizzes, or assignments that explicitly prohibit outside assistance.
  • Pasting confidential or personal data into public AI tools without permission.

Talking with Your Instructor

Because every instructor and course may have different rules, the safest approach is to ask: "How can I use AI tools appropriately in this class?" When in doubt, assume you should do the core work yourself and use AI only as a tutor.

If you do use AI to help with an assignment, be prepared to explain how you used it and to show that you understand the material.
